What is metallosis?

Metal-on-metal hip implants, like those produced by DePuy, are prone to breakage caused by the friction of their metallic parts rubbing against each other. This can lead to wear which results in debris being discharged in the joint. The resulting particles can contaminate a patient’s bloodstream and cause tissue necrosis, a condition known as metallosis and referred to commonly as metal toxicity.

Symptoms of a faulty DePuy Hip Replacement

According to the FDA, symptoms of metal toxicity may include:

  • Hip, leg, or groin pain
  • Swelling around the hip joint
  • Impaired kidney function
  • Hearing or vision impairments
  • Skin rashes
  • Grinding, squeaking, and popping sounds from the hip joint
  • Thyroid problems, including general discomfort, fatigue, and weight gain
  • Feelings of depression
  • Cardiomyopathy, which is a condition that weakens and enlarges the heart muscle
